Living in Clapham North

Situated just west of Brixton - and enjoying the delights of Clapham Common - Clapham North is a haven for young professionals who want the party on their doorstep and a painless commute the next morning. Clapham High Street is situated on a former Roman military road, all traces of which have since vanished, but the legacy lives on with its great options for travel in and out of the city. The area contains Clapham Common, Clapham High Street, and Clapham North station, which provide Northern and Overground services into the city.

The area around Clapham Common Station has, over the last ten or so years, filled out with bars, cafes and restaurants, and is considered the centre of Clapham. There’s also ample living space in the area, with rows of charming terraced houses on tree-lined streets, and a few new-build apartment blocks.

But with the common just to the south, the area has ample green space, giving local inhabitants a breath of fresh air as well.

Culture and Leisure

Clapham Leisure Centre

This is a newly built, accessible leisure centre situated just off the high street. It provides excellent gym facilities, as well as a massive pool and sports halls for tennis, basketball, badminton and more. There are also a multitude of classes and training sessions available there, all at affordable prices. It’s an invaluable resource for the local community.

Clapham Picturehouse

Who doesn’t love going to the cinema, especially when your local cinema is as nice as the Picture House on Venn Street? It has four screens, showing the latest blockbusters, as well as independent films and classics. It’s excellent bar and restaurant also offer something even if you don’t fancy going to see a film, providing a relaxing atmosphere and range of wines and local beers.

Clapham Common

The common is a great resource for locals, providing a lush open space for dog walking, among many other things. There are a range of sporting facilities, including for fishing, skateboarding, bowling, cricket, football, and running. In the summer, it’s often packed with people lounging on the grass, having a good time, and there are a couple of annual festivals held there that host big name acts.

Food and Drink

The Clapham North

A great local, serving delicious, classic pub food in a cosy, newly refurbished interior. Serving craft beers and cocktails, it accommodates many levels of leisure, from a midweek pint, to a weekend celebration. It also has a space for watching the latest sports events with friends. They have different menus depending on the season and the day of the week, and your dog’s allowed in too.

Bodean’s

The pig sign of Bodean’s has in recent years become a common sight in London, and if you visit, it's easy to see why. Their take on American BBQ is second to none, and it’s reasonably priced too. It’s not a clean dining experience, enjoying some of the best ribs in the city, but that’s all part of the fun of eating at Bodean’s. The interior is very sleek, and it fits in well with its neighbours on the fashionable high street.

Tsunami

Tsunami is fresh yet decadent, beautifully presented Japanese fusion food, located just down the road from Clapham North station. Having been around since 2001, it’s a well-established dive that has seen many celebrations. One particularly spectacular dish to try is the Seafood Ju-Ban Yaki, which is presented to you on a searing hot plate, before being set alight right at the table.

Is it for you?

Clapham North has all you could need as a resident, but with an ample supply of bars and restaurants it's also a great shout for Londoners further afield. Access to local schools, and picturesque period housing, makes it’s perfect for families too.
